Protein Explorer, free software developed by Eric Martz in the UMass Microbiology Department, enables students and researchers to find, see, and understand the 3D structures of proteins, nucleic acids, and their complexes with ligands. Flash movies show you how to use it, and extensive context-sensitive help is displayed automatically. It offers links to high-quality complementary bioinformatics servers, for example, to obtain monomers or specific oligomers, and for assessment of the quality of the 3D molecular model being explored. Martz teaches short courses in protein 3D structure and bioinformatics.

The ConSurf Server automatically identifies regions of 3D protein structures with high (or low) evolutionary conservation, showing its results in Protein Explorer. It is a collaboration between Eric Martz (UMass Microbiology) and the group of Nir Ben-Tal in Tel-Aviv, Israel.
